Large abstract painting by Kalpana Soanes ‘Mulled Wine and Mistletoe’

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘Mulled Wine and Mistletoe’ is a vibrant large abstract painting by Kalpana Soanes. In the words of Kalpana ‘the vibrant colours in this painting brighten up my day every time I’m in the studio’.

For this abstract painting, Kalpana worked with a wider range of colours than she normally would. Being the end of the year, she was inspired by both the Autumn colours and the Christmas season. Resulting in a very festive artwork.

The painting is very large at 183cm x 61cm on a 4cm deep edge canvas. Kalpana used acrylic paints in yellow, pink and green. which are vibrant and uplifting. Raising the spirit in time for Christmas.  She has also added texture to the painting and highlights of gold, which adds warmth to the painting.

The sides of the painting are painting black, which will compliment any home colour scheme. The canvas is ready to hang, requiring no frame and comes signed and with a certificate of Authenticity.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kalpana Soanes grew up sketching pictures in the sand on the shores of East Africa. However, this simple existence was short-lived. Her flamboyant style had begun to draw crowds. Naturally, she took commissions. Not for money, just cake, or simply, compliments.

She developed her skills every single day, experimented with new techniques and frequently sketched pictures in public. Spurred on by the interest it generated, Kalpana started selling her artwork at a very young age. She liaised with local businesses and soon her work was scattered all over the world.

Next, she enjoyed an exciting career in computers, worked and lived in different countries in Europe and abroad for several years. However, something was not right. She missed the good old days. Eventually, her inner artist broke free of corporate serfdom. Now based in a quaint British village, Kalpana Soanes is a full-time artist. Her work involves acrylics and oils on canvas, often accentuated with mixed media.

QUESTIONS TO THE ARTIST ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Apart from Christmas, did anything else inspire you to use these combination colours?
They’re happy colours I think and I always feel my spirits rising when I first put them on the canvas. In this case I started slowly experimenting, but then got well and truly carried away as I found myself remembering fondly happy cosy times at this time of year.

How does the size of a painting influence your creative process?
Creatively, I love painting on large canvases as I have total freedom to enjoy the process without worrying about any limits.  Large canvases are particularly suited to my abstracts as they give so much more space to express the emotions I want to convey.

What challenges do you face on such a large scale painting?
Apart from the obvious logistical challenges of materials, storage and packing, you have to take care during the creative process.  Such large paintings can look very different from different distances and angles.  I sometimes get very surprised but that’s what makes it fun.

What emotions do you want to evoke in the viewer?
For me, the warm and secure feeling you have spending time with your loved ones.  Just enjoying each other’s company and forgetting the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  But viewing paintings is personal and I’m sure everybody will have their own opinion.  For me, that’s the joy of such paintings.
