Our “Artwork of the Week” this week is a striking abstract seascape titled Starry Starry Night III by artist Maxine Martin. The painting features a serene view of the sea at night, with three sailboats in the distance.

One of the most striking features of this painting is the use of ink as the medium. The ink gives the colours a vibrancy and depth that would not have been possible with other mediums. The artist has used a combination of deep blue, turquoise, purple, and gold hues to create a rich and textured painting.

The three sailboats in the distance add a sense of movement and interest to the painting. The white sails and the water around them create a striking contrast against the deep blue background. This creates a sense of depth and perspective in the painting, drawing the viewer in and encouraging them to explore the details of the artwork.

Overall, Starry Starry Night III is a beautiful painting that showcases the artist’s skill and creativity. The use of ink as the medium, combined with the rich colour palette, creates a painting that is both vibrant and soothing. It is a perfect addition to any art collection and would look stunning in any room.

What inspired you to create this particular abstract seascape?

All of my seascape paintings are inspired by our wonderful coastline here in Cornwall.  The stunning rugged coastal views close to where I live have an enormous impact on my work, and almost all of my seascapes involve a dramatic sky.

Can you describe the process of using ink as the medium for this painting?

When I painted ‘Starry Starry Night III’ I was inspired by the fabulous sunsets we get here in the West of Cornwall, and the best way to capture the ethereal and atmospheric look is to use inks, the translucent effect is beautiful and it is one of my favourite mediums.

What was your intention in using the colour palette that you did?

I usually use some acrylic accents, maybe for boats, as I did in this specific piece, ‘Starry Starry Night III’ has  sparkly twinkling stars in a night sky

How do you hope viewers will respond to and interpret this artwork, and what message, if any, were you hoping to convey through your use of colour and composition?

My hope and intention in creating this painting was to give the viewer a sense of calm and serenity by the bold use of colour . My message is that even in a storm you can find a silver lining.
