Kalpana Soanes

Artist Quote:  Expressing myself through art feels like a whole new freedom, making art a joy to create.

Kalpana Soanes, a talented artist, was born and raised in East Africa, where her passion for art blossomed as she sketched pictures in the sand along the shores. Her distinctive and flamboyant style quickly garnered attention, attracting crowds eager to witness her creative process. Embracing the interest she sparked, Kalpana began taking commissions, not seeking monetary rewards but instead accepting cake or heartfelt compliments as her payment.

Determined to hone her skills, Kalpana dedicated herself to daily practice and experimentation with various artistic techniques. She fearlessly sketched in public spaces, allowing her art to flourish while captivating passersby with her expressive works. As demand for her art grew, Kalpana started selling her creations at a remarkably young age, establishing partnerships with local businesses that eventually led to her artwork being cherished worldwide.

Despite her flourishing career, Kalpana felt a void within her as she pursued an exciting path in the realm of computers, working and living in different countries across Europe and beyond. She yearned for the simplicity and authenticity of her early days as an artist on the African shores.

The pull of her true passion could not be ignored any longer. Breaking free from the corporate world, Kalpana made a life-changing decision to embrace her inner artist fully. Settling in a picturesque British village, she dedicated herself to her craft as a full-time artist.

Kalpana’s preferred mediums of expression became acrylics and oils on canvas, often elevated with the use of mixed media. Her artwork transcends traditional boundaries, capturing the essence of emotions and experiences through vivid colours and bold strokes. Each piece tells a unique story, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in her imaginative world.

Rik Saggers

Artist Quote: My art enables me to express my thoughts, concerns and connection with the animal world in a way that I believe and hope they exist, in a loving way towards each other but also heaped with mischief and adventure

Rik Saggers is a full-time artist based in Ipswich, UK, whose journey into the world of art was shaped by a childhood challenge. Diagnosed as colour blind, he struggled to distinguish between various hues, making art class a daunting experience. Fearful of judgement, he sought refuge in graphite, the trusty pencil, as his chosen medium. This shift allowed him to focus solely on shading and tones, eliminating the stress of handling colours and enabling him to concentrate on refining his techniques.

What initially appeared to be a hindrance turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Rik. Embracing his unique circumstances, he honed his skills through practice and perseverance. He discovered that every hurdle can be an opportunity for growth and learning. His mastery over graphite art became a distinguishing feature of his work, setting him apart as a self-taught artist with a distinctive style.

Over the course of 15 years, Rik has exhibited his artwork across the UK, leaving a mark on the art scene. His creations have garnered admiration and found homes in private collections worldwide, reaching as far as Australia, the US, and various parts of Europe. His reputation as an accomplished artist continues to grow, earning him recognition and appreciation from art enthusiasts across the globe.

Driven by his passion for animal welfare and conservation, Rik found a deeper purpose for his artistic endeavours. The tragic story of Cecil the Lion, senselessly slain by a heartless individual, struck a chord within him. In response, Rik created his signature series of drawings, aptly named “Their Fragile World.” This collection portrays animals within or around glass, symbolising the delicate balance of their natural habitats and the beauty they exude despite the precariousness of their existence. Rik’s artistic vision captures a whimsical and joyful depiction of these creatures, imagining the playful lives they might lead if given the opportunity.

Through “Their Fragile World,” Riks art transcends mere aesthetics, becoming a medium to advocate for animal rights and the need for preserving our planet’s biodiversity. His creative expressions serve as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect these majestic beings and the environments they inhabit.
