Golden Poppies by Lesley Blackburn

Introduction

The glorious golden background really sets the scene so the red poppies stand out beautifully against it in this floral painting by Lesley Blackburn. Titled “Golden Poppies”, the painting has a summery feel to it, inviting you to bring the outside in with a piece of art. Both gold and red are warm colours and the splashes of colder tones like blue and purple are enough to give some balance to the artwork.

Specialising in London & landmark paintings in acrylic inks influenced by Piet Mondrian, in large impressionistic landscapes and seascapes influenced by Turner and in floral paintings which are full of textures, Lesley Blackbourn captures the beauty of British flora and the essence of the poppy flower through colour, shape and movement. Created in an impressionistic style, “Golden Poppies” can adorn any walls in any interior be that traditional or modern.

Where did the inspiration come from for this piece?

I love painting floral pieces and they always feature texture in my work as they look almost sculptural or 3D. People like the texture and poppies, in particular, work well with this technique. I try to focus on a theme and this one was all about a deep golden yellow.

What is the creative process when creating your floral paintings?

I usually start drawing the poppies out and doing the sculptural work on the poppies before I complete the background and as a medium, I mainly work in oils.

How long would this work have taken you?

I tend to work on this for a day and like to complete it within that time frame. If the painting is larger than this it will take longer.
