A matter of personal taste, geographical location and cultural context, humour is an essential part of the human journey that appeals to a wide audience. Depending on age, lifestyle, education and personality, one type of humour can be more appealing than another but beyond the aspects that differentiate our experience, the common ground is that humour makes us smile and laugh.

In the arts, humour is mostly present in literature, but more and more visual artists today explore the humour theme in their paintings. Even though there were times when humour in art was dismissed as not being, well, serious, the variety of art today makes more room for less explored themes that offer viewers something they can relate to.

Art may be a serious matter, but humorous art doesn’t take itself too seriously and this is precisely the point of being appealing to its audience. Humour could be subtitle or in your face, but no matter what approach an artist takes, a humorous painting will definitely put a smile on your face and make an impression for a long time. Not to mention that humorous paintings are created using the same materials, tools and painting techniques as any other serious painting so why not enjoy them just the same?
