Jessica Parker

Artist Quote: Being an artist allows me to express myself, to follow my creative passion in an instinctive manner showing my unique voice through my paintings

Jessica Parker is a talented artist who has always had a passion for painting. Encouraged by her mother, who was an artist herself, she pursued her love for art and the environment by completing a degree in Art and Environmental Studies (BAHons). Jessica then worked as a Millinery buyer for Harrods, which allowed her to continue being creative while developing her career.

After having three children, Jessica launched her second career as an artist on a professional level. She now teaches and paints regularly at Kingfisher Studios in Oxfordshire, where she focuses on her passion for abstracted landscape in mixed media with collage. Jessica’s painting process involves collecting ideas when out on walks, taking photos, and using words to describe the “live nature” of her surroundings. She then creates many collage and textural pieces from papers and painted study pieces, incorporating found objects and bits and pieces from old paintings

Using graphite initially, Jessica does a limited amount of planning and drawing, preferring to get “stuck in” on the basis that using acrylic paint she can change the bits she judges do not work. Her painting often takes on a life of its own as she aims to not recognize “mistakes” but rather looks to incorporate them, keeping her work spontaneous and free. She often paints in layers, adding and removing parts of the painting to reveal parts of those underneath, creating interesting negative shapes which she then incorporates into the design.

Jessica loves to work with strong, bold colours and the blues from indigo to turquoise. She uses a limited palette with black and white and with various mixtures of this palette she aims to achieve some simplification and unity. This year, she is painting the lighter hues of these colours while setting them against strong darks to create marked value differences to exaggerate form and tone. She also loves a bit of metallic and relies on mixed media to give her both hard and soft fluid edges, such as ink sprayed over painted structured lines and torn edges.

Depending on the theme of the painting, Jessica adapts the energy of her brushstrokes, from sweeping spontaneous marks for mountains and skies to smaller and more precise marks for details. She looks to stylize parts in response to her love of design and shape while bringing forward abstraction. Her studio space allows her to work freely on a large scale, painting on both canvas and cradled board panels for larger pieces. Some of her pieces are framed, while others have a more raw painted edge.

In addition to her regular work, Jessica is happy to consider commissions. She is a talented artist who combines her love of the environment with her passion for painting, resulting in beautiful and unique pieces of art.

The term “genre” refers to paintings that capture the everyday in a poetic and lyrical manner. Gerard uses various sources to transform and reflect common experiences that we all share.

Travel experiences have had a significant impact on his work, which is evident in the imagery of hotel facades, restaurants, yachts, marinas, and cars, including classic and racing cars.
