Winter landscape of the Bavarian Alps by Natasha Sokolnikova ‘Roofs of Bavaria’

Natasha Sokolnikva’s winter landscape, “Roofs of Bavaria,” captures the beauty of the Bavarian Alps. This artwork depicts the town of Berchtesgaden and the Alps beyond. It left a lasting impression on Natasha during her attendance at a conference in Germany several years ago.

While looking through a large window in the conference hall, Natasha was mesmerized by the view below, where the town nestled amidst the steep slopes of the Alpine mountains. The image became etched in Natasha’s mind from that moment forward.

Natasha vividly portrays the scene, describing it as a harmonious coexistence between the snow-dusted roofs of the houses and the grandeur of the Alps under the radiant winter sky. She emphasizes the captivating interplay of fog and clouds on the mountain peaks, likening the experience to an endless dance. In Natasha’s words, “The only thing better than mountains are mountains which you have never been to before.”

The painting meticulously details the charm of the town’s houses and churches, while the towering mountains dominate the scene with their jagged edges and blue-grey hue. Natasha’s exceptional attention to detail is evident in this piece, showcasing her mastery of watercolour, a medium known for its unforgiving nature. The painting demanded Natasha’s full concentration, an aspect impeccably executed in the final artwork.

This original watercolour piece measures 40 x 30 cm and is presented in a white bevelled-edge frame, complementing the painting perfectly.

QUESTIONS TO THE ARTIST

Did you paint the scene whilst at the conference, or did you do sketches, or take photographs?

Berchtesgaden is one of the most famous and picturesque resorts in Germany. I found the photo reference here in Germany.

Can you share more about any challenges, if any, you faced while working on this piece?

Working on this piece the main challenge is to paint quickly while the paper is wet. Otherwise, the gentle play of shades of clouds, snow and the “lightness” of watercolour will disappear.

How long did it take you to produce this artwork?

Usually it takes 2 working days and years of study and experience.

Is watercolour your preferred medium, or do you use other mediums too?

Watercolour is one of my favourite mediums, but I am a fan of pencil monochrome artworks as well.

Have you revisited the town and has it inspired any further paintings?

Yes, that region is not far from my home and it is the place “must to be visited” for its unforgettable atmosphere and views. I have a lot of references and plan to paint the series of artworks.
