Power of the Flower by Janice Rogers

Happiness embodies Power of the Flower by Janice Rogers. This artist enjoys the presence of flowers and it shows in her unique and awe inspiring floral pieces. In Power of the Flower we are enveloped by a floral arrangement befitting royalty. These flowers are painted so stunningly with every detail in perfect harmony with one another. The colour pallet for the arrangement of these flowers is remarkably well thought out, yet still wild in nature.

Another subtle aspect of this image has nothing to do with the flowers at all, but the background. Whisps of yellow and blue dictate a play of both night and day. On the right we see the hint of sunshine while the left is devoted to a blanket of stars. We may think of night and day as complete opposites, but Janice has married the two concepts as an encapsulating backdrop to the array of flowers.

Power of the Flower is a fitting name for this piece. Often, flowers can be thought of as weak and delicate. However, in urban environments, flowers have been known to push through concrete to capture the light and prosper. That power can be seen in every part of Power of the Flower. We are inundated with emotion and a demand to be seen from every petal. I think there is also a very human aspect in that notion as well.

We all want to be seen and regarded as different, in a good way. We are all unique and different, yet desire to be noticed at various times in our lives. Power of the Flower reminds us that there is power in numbers, but each unique and different individual makes up the world as a whole. If you were to take one flower out of this painting, something would always be missing and I believe that speaks of humanity as well.

A painting like this can bring about a lot of emotions and speculations, but allow us to hear from the artist, herself, Janice Rogers.

What is it about flowers that captures your attention?

I adore flowers. They make me feel alive, they make me happy and seeing their beauty unravel, watching them grow brings me great joy. Since childhood I’ve been drawn to colour, pattern and the intracity of marks. I love the detail of Klimt, the pattern of Morris and the colour of Monet and Kandinsky.

Do you have a favourite flower in this piece?

Agapanthus in particular play a notable role in many of my paintings. I grow them in abundance myself and look forward to their springtime blossom. Even now in the depths of winter, their dried presence still adorns my garden with grand stature.

There is a lot of emotion in Power of the Flower. Were you feeling specifically emotional when painting it?

I often find that after starting a painting with an idea in mind, I go down a totally new, adventurous path. For me, this is the purest form of creativity. After a life changing accident just over a year ago, my objectives have changed. I appreciate the simplicity of life and doing things that give me joy and  fulfillment – that means more time for painting.

Is there anything unique and underlying about this piece you want the viewer to pick up on?

I hope anyone viewing this painting sees the joy, the energy and passion that I hold. I hope the painting draws them in, taking them right into the garden itself and giving them a feeling of calm and comfort.

Your work showcases a true skill that not all artists can master. Are you classically trained or self taught?

As a child I wanted to be a designer. My dream came true and I spent 16 years designing patterns for the home furnishings industry, with the skills I developed during those years forming the basis of my paintings today. The layers of knowledge over time and the development of techniques build a confidence that now comes naturally when hitting a blank canvas.
