Paula Oakley is a contemporary artist who creates beautiful realist paintings using acrylics on box canvas. She is based in East Sussex, UK and notes her surrounding environment as forming the main inspiration for her collection of work. Oakley possesses delicate skills with a paintbrush, and uses them to utilise the dense pigmentation of acrylic paints to produce vivid, crisp and lively paintings. As a result, the work she produces and can often look even more vibrant than reality itself.
Oakley is a regular artist in our online art gallery, and we host so many of her charming pieces it was hard to pick just one out that we think would look great on a postcard! Lollipops and Lace is a firm favourite this summer however, provoking an authentic sense of nostalgia. It is the additional elements such as the shabby chic tablecloth and on looking flamingo friend that inject this painting with the kind of personality that would make it irresistible to pick up, when searching for a postcard to send to loved ones!
Miss Tulip choses her ice-cream
We seem to be choosing an ice-cream theme for our postcard picks, but there is no other subject more appropriate for summer! Elena Kourenkova favours a more abstract style than Oakley, yet her use of colour and shading keeps the characters she paints bordering the edge of the cartoon world and reality. Rather than crisp and sharp lines, Kourenkova uses oil to create her paintings which results in a less refined image.
Kourenkova herself admits that she creates her paintings for sale in order to ‘make people smile’, and this scene of a disorderly que for the ice cream parlour certainly does that! Humour is a key element of any postcard you will see at seaside resorts across the world, and we think this abstract oil painting would make anyone smile if it was posted through their letterbox!

As well as scene setting pictures or humorous imagery, wildlife is a popular subject for postcard art. Even if people don’t write a message on the back and send it to loved ones, a postcard with someone’s favourite animal on can be a simple but thoughtful gift to take back from a holiday.
