In Suzette’s Words

In creating this artwork, I aimed to capture a sense of spontaneity and joy through abstract interpretations of nature. Using acrylics, collage, and India ink, I constructed a playful scene filled with vibrant textures and whimsical forms. This piece celebrates the beauty of the natural world, reflecting both its wildness and wonder. It will invigorate any space with its energetic and uplifting spirit.

QUESTIONS TO THE ARTIST

Firstly, thank you for this playful scene. How do you create such texture in your artwork?

In this instance I pasted some packaging paper to the canvas. A layer of aluminium, then I pasted kitchen roll tissue with PVA glue, then gesso. After that I started with layers of paint.

Do you always use mixed media? And if so, why?

Yes I always use mixed media as the 3D effect gives another dimension. Also different paint and ink mediums help to give special effects in a painting.

How long would an artwork like this take to produce? And what challenges, if any, do you face creating them?

It took a while as the materials needed to dry in between layers. The challenge is to paste the tissues so that it doesn’t look like tissue blocks.

Have you always painted in this naïve style? Or have you experimented with other styles?

I love to experiment with different styles but I would say my work is more Naive than anything else.

Lastly, which artists inspire you?

Van Gogh is my utmost favourite. His brushstrokes and colours really energises me. My second favourite is Lowry and the scenes of the past he created.
