Large Seascape painting ‘Turquoise Sea III’ by Catherine Kennedy

Turquoise Sea III is a large realistic seascape oil painting on canvas measuring 122 x 61 cm. Framed in a white washed wooden frame and ready to hang. The dimension framed is 126 x 64cm. Comes with a certificate of authenticity and a collector guarantee.

This painting is inspired by the beautiful beach at Watergate Bay. It has a vast stretch of sand, big Atlantic swells, and high sea-beaten cliffs. A dramatic landscape, it’s one of the county’s wildest coastlines and considered by many as one of Cornwall’s best beaches.

Watergate Bay beach is around 3 miles from Newquay on the North Cornwall coast, stretching out for two miles of golden sand, imposing cliffs, and untamed sea. Spectators, surfers, and world-class kite surfers flock here for the enormous waves providing a spectacular sight on any day. Privately owned, the beach is dog-friendly year-round and if the sea-breeze gets too fresh, there are cafes and restaurants close by to shelter and warm up in.

About the Artist

I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. It is also a robust medium, which I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too.

Personally, I find that working in oils is the ultimate art medium. It allows me to create a wide range of effects, from subtle layers to bold strokes. It also provides me with the necessary tools to bring my artwork to life. For me it is a timeless medium.

I have a background studying film and video art at the University of Plymouth, which has impacted on the way I paint. Creating a sense of movement and escapism in my work is important to me. If the viewer can feel they could walk across the sand or dive into the sea, that is what I want to achieve.

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth and am an Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark

QUESTIONS TO THE ARTIST

Firstly, the painting is very realistic, I can almost hear the crashing of the waves. How do you create such realism in your artworks?

Years of practice and layer upon layer of paint and glazes.

Do you work from an image or on location?

Both. I sketch on the beach, take photos and videos of the ocean waves. Video is really useful as you can move the film back and forwards to get the wave turning just at the right moment. Moving time, back and forwards.

Are seascapes your main subject matter? And if so, why are they your preference?

Seascapes are my main focus. I am inspired by our beautiful coastline and love the ever changing nature and colours found there.

Which artist, if any, have inspired you?

I love the work of Kurt Jackson. His freedom with brush marks and application of paint is really inspiring.

Lastly, how long have you been creating your beautiful artworks?

I have painted all my life but didn’t turn professional until I graduated from Plymouth University in 2008.
