Notte Insonne by Zhana VielI like to listen to my favorite music while painting. My art is inspired mainly by classical music. I like to experiment with many techniques and media.

‘Notte Insome’ was created using palette knife and  oil paint which has been slowly built up layer by layer to achieve depth and texture. I always create a background by painting different shapes in diferent colors, layers which show under the top layers and  then I will finaly create the acctual image on top.

The painting was inspired by the novel ‘Anna Karenina’, a classic story of doomed love by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The title ‘Notte Insome’ (‘Sleeples Night’) I chose to be in italian as I think it sounds more beautiful and dramatic.

“All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.” -Leo Tolstoy
