A difficult subject to capture, emotions have caught the interest of many artists from the past up until today. When we visit an art museum and look at portraits or at paintings of historical and biblical scenes, we can also see the emotions on people’s faces, from modesty and romantic love to fear and terror.

In traditional art, emotions are closely linked to portraiture and the depiction of human figures in various contexts. In modern art, however, complex emotions can be captured in digital art such as in Laura Ansells work, or they can express the artists’ feelings, mainly through abstract art.

The latter is the chosen genre for many artists today, precisely for this reason: the freedom of expressing their emotions and the freedom for the viewer to interpret them as they see fit.

“Visual art has the freedom to speak in ways much more than the words in a language. It accumulates in itself the magic which makes me feel something without being able to communicate it”, says Maia Nikolov.

As it is Valentine’s Day tomorrow, we can’t talk about emotions without mentioning one of the most recognisable symbols of love, the heart. We hope you enjoy our selection, ranging from portraiture and decorative heart art to various abstract pieces featuring emotions.
