Butterflies represent transformation and life as well as beauty and freedom. Extensively depicted in fine art of all times, butterflies are well represented in other creative fields too, from jewellery making and textile art to pottery and glass art.

If you look at our online gallery, there are several artists that paint butterflies in various styles and media.

Lilamani de Silva creates beautiful acrylic paintings in which butterflies represent energetic movement and the joy of summer while Paresh Nrshinga offers a modern take on the butterfly theme with his abstract –decorative paintings created in acrylic and gold leaf with a gloss lacquer finish.

Victoria Stothard’s latest addition to her gallery is a series of paintings with butterflies created in mixed media on box canvas with a great level of detail, skilfully capturing their colourful patterns.

In her artwork Butterfly Exotica, Marcia Clare Kuperberg offers a digital version of the butterfly theme. This is how she describes her creative process: “I began with a handmade and etched polyblock which was inked to make various monoprints. I then created digital variations on these using special inks and papers.”

From Vincent van Gogh’s butterfly series to today’s interpretation of the theme, butterfly paintings are delightful, lively and aesthetically pleasing.
