Born in Switzerland, Alexandra spent most of her life travelling and living in various Asian countries, such as Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand, before she finally settled down in Somerset in 2009 where she established herself as an artist. ” Painting for me means exploring the interaction of colour and form in order to create particular moods, mostly of places I find especially beautiful and worth capturing to share with viewers.” For today’s post, we are happy to share Alexandra’s contribution to our ‘Art2Arts Artist at Christmas’ series. Enjoy!

Do you give your art as a gift to family and friends?

I tend not to give my art as a gift to family or friends for Xmas as I don’t want them to feel obliged to hang it on their wall. Exceptions are very small paintings or painted tiles which I then choose if I know the recipient’s taste in style and colours.

What painting are you most proud of this year?

I think my soft pastel painting ‘Golden Hour on Dartmoor’ is the one I feel most proud of. It was not easy to get the colour scheme right and technically it was quite a challenge to paint all these different textures, from rocks and grass in the foreground to the airy translucency of the evening sky. it took me a good week, on and off, to finish it.

Where are you planning to spend Christmas this year?

Due to the present situation with covid, I have decided to stay at home and for once not to travel to Switzerland, where my family lives, as much as it hurts not to see them; I prefer them and me to stay safe. So it will be a very low-key Christmas but never mind.

What inspiration do you get from the festive season?

The festive season always brings time to focus and reflect on what I want to achieve in the coming year. I don’t directly feel inspired by Christmas as such, but it is the moment of the year when I look back on my artistic journey and take the resolution to be bolder in the future, trying out new techniques and new mediums. For 2022, I am determined to paint more in oils.
