Composition: Positive/Negative by Stephen Conroy

Where did the inspiration come from for this piece?

“Composition: Positive/Negative”, along with my previous two pieces, is very important to me.  They are all ‘revision’ works.  I have painted them all to a point that I believed was the completion and put them online to sell.  It is only recently that I have discovered that the paintings were only half complete – that once they were ‘blocked in’ this was the actual starting point of the painting.  So I took this and the other paintings off-line and reworked them.  Not too much but I made firm and decisive decisions and changes.  I am now happy with the results.

How long would this work have taken you?

In total, this painting took about 10 days.

What is the creative process when creating your vibrant colourful art?

My inspiration is simple – I love shapes and pure bright colour.  As I grow older I take great pleasure in creating paintings of joy, celebration and warmth – something to brighten the day especially with the cold weather and constant bad news.  A love of artists like Klee, Kandinsky and especially Sonia Delaunay inspire my thinking.
