Art2Arts Artist Susan Wooler

We are continuing our ‘Artist at Christmas’ series with a mini-interview with Susan Wooler. Susan is an abstract artist whose art is a  juxtaposition of soft and delicate with accents of thick texture and bold colour.  She is a regular contributor to our online magazine and one of our most popular artists.

Do you give your art as a gift to family and friends?

I often give my art as gifts to family and friends, this is usually when a family member or friend visits my studio and spots one they like and ‘sort of hints’ it would work well in their home :).

My mum, in particular, has quite a few of my paintings, she has Alzheimer’s and is in a Care Home, so I’ve painted bright, bold and colourful paintings which she really loves and they brighten up her room and make her happy

What painting are you most proud of this year?

I think the painting I’m most proud of is ‘Bay in September’ and it was inspired by a warm autumn day; I had taken a trip to Church Bay in Anglesey, the mesmerizing cloudy sky and landscape had an amazing array of colours, blues, greens, warm ochre, tans and browns; rich earthy tones the scenery was breathtaking and I hope I managed to create a depth within Bay in September.

Where are you planning to spend Christmas this year?

At home in North Wales with my husband, Tony, and our Cat, Quando. We lost our beautiful Black Lab, Frank, in September.

Every year we have a ritual of going for a morning walk on the beach; this Christmas morning we are going to scatter some of Franks ashes on the beach.

What inspiration do you get from the festive season?

I don’t necessarily get inspiration from the ‘festive season’ but I do from ‘the seasons’ and it being Winter. I love the cold crisp mornings, there’s a low lying mist in the valleys of the sand dunes, the beautiful welsh hillsides and landscape look eerie yet stunningly beautiful. There’s a frost on branches and snow on the hills and the winter sun creates shadows and colours which stimulate my imagination and inspiration flows.
